John Baxter (born June 28, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois) is a seasoned American football coach renowned for his expertise in developing elite special teams units and mentoring offensive position groups, particularly tight ends. With over four decades of collegiate coaching experience, Baxter returned to the Fresno State Bulldogs ahead of the 2022 season as Associate Head Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, and Tight Ends Coach — roles he continues to serve with distinction. Over his long career, he has held key coaching positions across multiple Power 5 programs, including USC and Michigan, and has worked with a range of units such as special teams, tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, linebackers, and the defensive line. Known for producing highly productive special teams units, Baxter’s leadership has helped Fresno State’s return game and kicking units achieve significant success, including top-5 Mountain West rankings in kickoff and punt returns. 

Off the field, Baxter’s contributions extend beyond X’s and O’s. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Loras College and a master’s in higher education from Iowa State University, and he is deeply committed to academic success and player development. He is married to his wife, Jill, and they have two daughters, Kelly and McKenzie. Throughout his career, Baxter has garnered respect as both a coach and mentor, shaping not just competitive units on the field but also helping student-athletes grow in the classroom and beyond.
